So glad you decided to swing by! Here’s a *virtual* cup of something warm and delicious. Most of my current days are spent working on final papers for the semester (reading and writing and editing some more) while also thinking about what dessert I’m going to make for Thanksgiving. Last year I did the classic move of two (homemade, of course) pumpkin pies, but this year I want to do something a little more Southern. Maybe Pecan? Ooh…even better…Jackson Pie! YUM.

As if you didn’t already know this, but September is traditionally fashion month. (Because I know “fashion month” is at the top of your priority list…) New York Fashion Week always happens in September and the “September issue” of Vogue is always the thickest and glossiest issue of all. It’s also back-to-school month, which stirs up nostalgia for picking out that first day of school look. Do you remember what you wore to the first day of seventh grade? I do. A black a-line skirt dotted with tiny colorful flowers paired with a black, short sleeved mock-neck sweater from The Limited (and probably low cut sneakers.) I would 100% wear that outfit today.
This September, I’ve decided to route some of my creative energy to my wardrobe. My goals are to 1.) figure out what pieces I don’t wear (or hesitate to wear) and 2.) get more creative with the pieces that I do wear. Here I’m sharing the custom method that I’m crafting as I go along (feel free to implement one or all of these suggestions to your closet!)

How often do you wash your hair?
Sorry if that question seems a little out of left field…I know there are more pressing issues happening in the world right now (I mean, just look at Rod Rosenstein’s un-blinking dead gaze.) But I’m curious- do you wash your hair every day? Every other day? Once a week?

It’s Friday, and while I may be swamped in research papers and never-ending assignments, that doesn’t mean that I don’t want a 5 min scroll break while studying. Instagram is my favorite of the social apps because it fuses the best parts of entertainment media: beautiful images, interesting conversation, and easy-to-discover good content.

Sylvan Clayworks stunning handmade ceramic homewares
So my sister-in-law, the genius artist lady behind Sylvan Clayworks, somehow takes clay and paint and glaze and makes THE most beautiful items for the home. Coffee mugs, platters for your Thanksgiving turkey, plates and bowls, little dishes for your rings, and gorgeous planters, each unique piece has this earthy quality that is both modern and timeless. We have several things around the house that she’s made, but one of my very favorites is this nice coffee scoop.

Remember that scene from Clueless where Cher goes to her closet to get dressed and instead of pulling hangers of clothing out from her closet, she sits at a 1995 Apple and clicks through a computer program to select her outfit for the day? It’s like ancient digital paperdolls, which I’m 100% here for. If you are too young to recall this epic scene…enjoy it here!

I’ve been thinking about mindsets lately and specifically about our mindset as it’s connected with fashion and shopping and how we get dressed. If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I like to post #LOTD (or, look of the day) shots because honestly, I love seeing other people’s looks- they inspire me to be more creative and they give me ideas for new ways of wearing things.
I’ve always loved getting dressed and when I was younger (especially during my teen years of freedom and part-time job money) I spent a good chunk of my time combing the local thrift stores looking for sartorial gems. When I think about those days, I miss the sense of exploration, like treasure hunting in your own hometown. Getting dressed was all about *fun* and about expressing what I was thinking or feeling in that moment- not about trends or what was expected of me from any outside source.

It’s Wednesday, it’s been a long week already (anyone else?), and we’re just barely on the cusp of an *actual* season change…so let’s talk fun fall stuff, okay? My brain can’t handle much else.
Fall fashion (including beauty) is hands down the best sartorial season and no, you can’t argue with me, its a plain fact. Perfectly broken in jeans, soft sweaters over even-softer worn t-shirts, booties, hats (!!!), mussed up hair (or a slept-in braid), and my favorite– the return of lipstick. Yes and amen.
Here’s a few of my current favs, pretty tones that are versatile and do well for workday-to-date-night looks. I’m thinking the goal should be a nice balance of soft pulled-together femininity meets relaxed tomboy at a weekend bonfire. Links below!
